The Best Cocktail Bars To Visit When In New York City

New York City, renowned for its vibrant nightlife and eclectic mix of cultures, offers a plethora of cocktail bars each with its unique charm and style. Start your journey in the Lower East Side, where you can discover speakeasy-style bars hidden behind unmarked doors offering expertly crafted cocktails in an intimate setting. In the bustling neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, you'll find rooftop bars that provide stunning views of the Manhattan skyline, perfect for sipping a refreshing cocktail as the sun sets. Head to the West Village for a more classic experience, where bars serve timeless cocktails with a modern twist, often accompanied by live jazz or piano music that adds to the ambiance. Midtown Manhattan, known for its hustle and bustle, is home to luxurious hotel bars that offer sophisticated settings and innovative cocktail menus curated by world-class mixologists. For a taste of history, visit some of the city's oldest bars where you can soak in the nostalgia while enjoying a traditional cocktail. Each neighborhood in New York City presents a distinct atmosphere, ensuring that whether you're seeking a laid-back evening or an upscale experience, there's a cocktail bar to match your mood.

Attaboy

Attaboy is one of the first "hip" bars I frequented when I relocated to New York City. Situated in the Lower East Side and operated by two former staff members of the renowned (now closed) Milk & Honey, it quickly gained a stellar reputation among my friends in the food and beverage industry. With a no-reservations policy, securing a bar seat feels accessible — you don’t need to be part of the city's elite to savor the cocktails.

Speaking of cocktails, co-owner Sam Ross created the whiskey-based Penicillin, which is an excellent starting point. If Scotch isn’t your preference, be prepared for a bit of spontaneity, as the bar doesn’t offer menus. Every bartender I’ve met has been friendly, inquisitive, and knowledgeable.

However, it’s also one of the smallest bars in New York, with just 28 seats, so be ready to cozy up next to tourists now that its fame has spread. Arrive early. Named "The Best Bar in North America" by Vogue in 2022, the snug atmosphere is definitely worth it.

Bar Goto

I first came across Bar Goto thanks to a bartender friend who took me there, which is always a promising sign—bartenders tend to know the best spots for exceptional drinks and fellow mixologists. The owner, Kenta Goto, honed his craft at Pegu Club, mastering a range of stylish and delectable techniques. As I admired the creative incorporation of sake and Japanese ingredients in the cocktails, it became evident, especially with the line stretching down the sidewalk, that I wasn't the only one captivated by this place. With just 30 seats, this cozy bar on the Lower East Side has limited space.

Bar Goto has garnered numerous prestigious awards, including "Bar of the Year" from Bon Appetit, recognition as one of the "50 Best Bars in New York Right Now" by Time Out, and a spot as a James Beard Outstanding Bar Program Semifinalist. On a personal note, I must say that their savory cabbage pancakes are the best in the city, especially after indulging in a couple (or more) Ume Palomas.

Clover Club

As a resident of Manhattan, I rarely venture to other boroughs unless there's a compelling reason. Clover Club, situated in a vibrant part of Brooklyn, certainly qualifies. A couple of years ago, my friend from the industry took me there for my birthday, and I enjoyed one of the finest Manhattans I've ever had.

The bar also boasts an impressive brunch and dinner menu. While I haven't tried the brunch offerings, I can confidently say that the assorted deviled eggs on the dinner menu are exquisite, as are the fried chicken sandwiches. The atmosphere is sophisticated, with conversations kept at a pleasant volume. The soft candlelight and exposed brick in the bar area create a cozy, home-like feel reminiscent of a charming brownstone.

Having been in operation for over 15 years, Clover Club continues to impress. It was named "The Absolute Best Cocktail Bar in New York" by Grub Street in 2016, and you can now also participate in a cocktail class at the newly opened Saloon next door—perfect for picking up some skills to bring back to your own brownstone.

Dante

Dante has two locations situated about 10 minutes apart, and as someone who has mistakenly made plans at one only to end up at the other, I can assure you that you can't go wrong with either. Cafe Dante, located in Greenwich Village, is where I enjoyed an after-work negroni with my director of photography following a color correction session for the film we collaborated on. During happy hour, a variety of inventive negronis are offered at significant discounts (and they’re always delightful). This location is the oldest, having been established as an Italian café in the early 1900s, and has welcomed notable figures like Patti Smith and Bob Dylan. In 2019, it also earned a prestigious spot on the World's 50 Best Bars list, ranking No. 1.

The newer venue, Dante West Village, features a more Spanish-inspired ambiance. This is my go-to spot for an ice-cold martini during the aptly named "Martini Hour." When ordered dirty, it comes with a sidecar of olive juice, allowing you to customize your drink to your preferred level of brininess.

Death & Co.

This bar is conveniently situated just around the corner from the establishment where I used to work, which means I spent plenty of time there before and after my shifts in the mid-2010s. As one of the East Village's longstanding havens for exceptional cocktails, this bar has published three books and even launched a merchandise line, leveraging its established reputation to expand nationally and offer canned cocktails.

While it might not feel as unique to visit a bar that has evolved into more of a brand, I still encourage you to experience the original spot where all the excitement began. The bartenders remain dedicated to crafting handmade drinks tailored to your preferences and are more than happy to guide you through the extensive menu if you find it overwhelming. There’s no standing room here, so if you manage to snag a seat, prepare for an elevated experience. I recommend trying any of the original cocktails, categorized by flavor profile, but I have a particular fondness for the Seismic Collision—a smoky mezcal-based drink that tastes like a sophisticated, late-night margarita.

Donna

Donna is one of the newer additions to this list, and I was hesitant to include it simply because I adore it so much and can usually find a seat at the bar on any given night without it feeling too crowded. Tucked away on a quaint side street in the West Village (the original location was in Brooklyn), I was initially drawn here because, in full transparency, it’s owned by a friendly acquaintance, and it has now adopted a worker-friendly co-ownership model.

Donna offers frozen drinks that might seem basic—like a piña colada—but they’ve taken them to the next level. One of my favorite celebratory cocktails here is the "Brancolada," which features pineapple and mint (they even put a birthday candle in mine once). The bar updates its menu seasonally, so there’s always something fresh to try, and right now, I’m obsessed with the Moonwalk Martini, which adds passionfruit liqueur to a classic vodka martini. If you’re feeling hungry, be sure to try the fantastic guacamole as well.

Double Chicken Please

One of the latest additions to the city's bar scene, Double Chicken Please, has quickly become one of the toughest reservations to secure. However, with plans for a front room renovation, there may soon be more opportunities to savor their highly sought-after cocktails.

I haven't had the chance to experience the new concept yet, so I can't comment on the updated bar program, but based on my previous visits, I expect it to be nothing less than exceptional. Double Chicken Please was named the top bar in North America in 2023 and ranked seventh this year.

The bar menu in The Coop, the reservation-only backroom, features unique cocktails inspired by culinary themes. Some of the drinks include The Waldorf Salad, Mango Sticky Rice, and my personal favorite, Cold Pizza. To be honest, I’ve only managed to secure a reservation once, right when the bar opened, so there may be other favorites I haven't discovered yet, but Cold Pizza remains a standout in my memory. If you happen to know anyone with connections, please let me know!

For more information, visit doublechickenplease.com or email [email protected]. The address is 115 Allen St, New York, NY 10002.

Dutch Kills

Another bar in the neighborhood—clearly, I’m a fan! Dutch Kills, awarded "Best Bar" in Time Out New York's Best of the City Awards in 2021, is situated in Long Island City. Conveniently located near the subway, it’s easy to get to. The wooden booths offer a sense of privacy, making it an ideal spot for a first date or a cozy catch-up with a friend. Recently, a new upstairs area called Debbie's has opened, featuring live music from Thursday to Sunday for those who enjoy entertainment alongside their cocktails.

A unique aspect of Dutch Kills is owner Richard Boccato's introduction of the "clear ice movement," emphasizing that high-quality cocktails deserve high-quality ice. If you look closely at any drink at Dutch Kills, you’ll see the stunning clarity of the ice cubes. During my last visit, I asked the bartenders for a spirit-forward mezcal cocktail and was served a delightful original creation. However, there are also plenty of set options available on the seasonal menu to choose from.

Employees Only

Once you navigate past the intriguing exterior, everything about Employees Only exudes a timeless charm — from the decor to the cocktails to the bartenders in their crisp white jackets, every detail is polished and intentional, creating a stunning atmosphere. Although the bar has been serving patrons for two decades, it consistently ranks on the North America 50 Best Bars list, landing at No. 15 this year.

Employees Only excels in crafting classic cocktails — their martini is a personal favorite — and they also feature a rotating nightly cocktail along with an array of sophisticated twists on traditional drinks. While some may argue that the bar's popularity has waned over the years, the bustling crowds of both tourists and locals tell a different story. In 2021, PureWow recognized the bar for having one of the best espresso martinis in New York, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and trendiness while maintaining its signature style.

Katana Kitten

I made the error of assuming I could stroll into the award-winning Katana Kitten with a group of six for a friend's birthday celebration. The hostess struggled to hold back a laugh as she informed me there would be a three-hour wait. I promised myself I would return another time.

About two weeks later, while I was passing time in the West Village, I found myself comfortably seated at the bar alone — truly the best way to experience a bar's offerings, especially one with a "director of deliciousness." I soaked in the atmosphere, which blended retro charm with stylish uniqueness. The drinks here are not only expertly crafted but also fun and vibrant. With bright shades of cerulean blue and neon green, and whimsical presentations, it’s impossible not to enjoy your time at Katana Kitten, even if you’re by yourself. Add in a generous happy hour discount every day, and you’ll leave satisfied — even if you have to wait.

Little Branch

If you find yourself in front of an unmarked door in the West Village, wondering if you've discovered Little Branch: the answer is yes, you have. This establishment is another gem in the semi-speakeasy scene, having endured both competition and the passage of time. As you descend the main staircase, you might feel as though you've stepped back in time. The bartenders don suspenders, the ambiance is illuminated by candlelight, and live jazz or piano music often fills the air.

While reservations aren't accepted, there are cozy booths in addition to bar seating, so arriving early increases your chances of securing a spot. At a classic bar, it’s fitting to order a traditional cocktail (though I’m not a fan of sazeracs, I’ve heard they’re exceptional here). Alternatively, you can opt for the "bartender's choice" and let the skilled mixologists surprise you. This is an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a thoughtfully crafted drink that invites you to take your time and savor each sip.

The Long Island Bar

When a friend began dating a bartender at this establishment, I had no idea that he—and this bar—were renowned globally for their pioneering role in the cocktail industry (it turns out one of the co-owners is credited with creating the cosmopolitan). A staple since the 1950s and another gem in Brooklyn, you might initially mistake this spot for a dive bar or diner due to the neon lights outside. However, once you step inside, you'll quickly see how dedicated the bar team is to their craft.

The Long Island Bar has been recognized as one of the Best Cocktail Bars in the Country by Thrillist and ranked No. 3 on Grubstreet's list of The Absolute Best Cocktail Bars in New York, and for good reason. Their cocktail menu remains consistent year-round, featuring a wide array of timeless classics that have reached perfection (believe me, you’ve never tasted a daiquiri like this one). It’s also worth mentioning that the burger and fries here are nearly as famous as the cocktail offerings, making it an excellent choice when you’re ready to enjoy a full meal or indulge in a late-night snack.

Mace

I stumbled upon Mace while searching for a cocktail bar close to the restaurant I selected for my birthday dinner, and I've returned many times since. The menus, adorned with illustrations of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, are as stunning as the cocktails themselves, showcasing fresh ingredients and spices. This dedication to quality is one reason the bar has been featured on the World's 50 Best Bars list for six consecutive years.

Recent highlights include bee pollen-infused tequila, cherry tomato-infused vodka, and fig leaf-infused gin. You can even customize your drinks with tinctures added to classic cocktails for just $0.50 each. If you've ever wanted to add mustard seed to your negroni or chrysanthemum to your margarita, now's your chance! Be sure to take advantage of the standard and late-night happy hours for discounted drinks as well.

Pro tip: If you visit during the colder months, ask for my favorite table by the fireplace. It's both practical and cozy, especially for groups.

Please Don't Tell (PDT)

With a name that suggests secrecy, PDT's hidden location has been well-known for years. This is another classic speakeasy in New York, but what sets it apart is the enjoyable journey to reach the bar.

To start, make a reservation (which is highly advisable), then head to Crif Dogs, the adjacent hot dog stand — you can't miss the enormous hot dog sign above the entrance. Go straight to the phone booth, and when you pick up the receiver, the hostess will guide you on what to do next.

The good news is that, despite the speakeasy trend becoming a gimmick in some venues, the cocktails at PDT remain exceptional. The bar was named "The World's Best Bar" in 2011 and received the "Best Bar Program" award from the James Beard Foundation in 2012. They often host guest bartenders from around the globe, but regardless of who is crafting the drinks, you're sure to have a memorable experience.

Pebble Bar

You might have come across Pebble Bar thanks to its prominent celebrity investors, such as Nicholas Braun, Pete Davidson, Arian Moayed, Mark Ronson, Jason Sudeikis, and Justin Theroux. The venue also boasts a rich history from its days as Hurleys, where legends like Johnny Carson and David Letterman would frequent.

Its prime location near 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the home of "Saturday Night Live," and Rockefeller Center makes it a perfect spot for both tourists and locals working in the vicinity. The establishment features two public floors, along with a private area for VIP guests and exclusive events, aptly named "Johnny's" in honor of Mr. Carson.

Guests can easily move between the second and third floors, provided there's an available table upstairs. Downstairs, you can enjoy a cocktail like the "If The Al-perol Fits," made with Aperol, gin, lemon, and egg white, while standing at the bar. If you're feeling peckish, head upstairs for oysters or a more filling option like a lobster roll. And if luck is on your side, you might even spot a celebrity.
