It almost backfired

Wendy's square burgers have become a defining feature of the brand, but they nearly lost customers due to their unconventional shape. While Wendy's aimed to highlight their high-quality meat, many customers were doubtful about a square hamburger. Accustomed to the round patties from competitors like McDonald's and Burger King, people found Wendy's burgers to appear unnatural and odd. Some even argued that the square shape contradicted its purpose, making the burgers seem more processed and of inferior quality.
In 2008, Wendy's merged with its parent company, Triarc, prompting a reevaluation of their menu. The company took customer feedback about the square burgers into account and opted for a minor adjustment. In 2011, Wendy's slightly rounded the edges of their burgers to create a less square look while still showcasing the meat. They also introduced a buttered bun and a thicker patty. It appears that Wendy's square hamburger is here to stay.
