The history of Price Club

The history of Price Club and Costco dates back to before their merger in 1993. Price Club thrived due to the marketing brilliance of Jim Sinegal, one of Costco's future co-founders. Both warehouse chains were founded on the same principle of providing exceptional deals to customers who were willing to purchase a warehouse club membership.
The concept took off, leading to the establishment of Price Club in 1976, several years prior to the launch of Costco. The first Costco opened its doors in 1983, and both warehouse chains experienced significant success. As the 1990s approached, Price Club faced a pivotal moment when Sam's Club proposed a merger.
Ultimately, Price Club chose to merge with Costco, resulting in a temporary name change to PriceCostco. However, the name was deemed too cumbersome, and it was soon changed back to Costco, effectively eliminating the Price Club brand. By 1997, Price Club had fully integrated into Costco, and its distinct identity as a brand faded away. Nevertheless, Price Club's legacy may continue to endure through Costco's famous rotisserie chickens and food court hot dogs, as well as the ongoing treasure hunts that customers enjoy.
