Boil a vinegar-water solution to clean your appliance

Descaling your electric kettle is a straightforward process that involves a simple self-cleaning routine using water and vinegar. Keeping a bottle of distilled vinegar in your kitchen is handy, as this acidic solution is effective for the task. Other types of vinegar, such as apple cider or white wine, can also be used, as well as lemon juice; however, be cautious, as their flavors may linger in the kettle if not rinsed thoroughly.
To begin cleaning your kettle, mix vinegar and water in a 1:3 ratio. If there is significant buildup, some people opt for a 1:1 mixture of vinegar and water. Fill the kettle to its maximum fill line and turn it on to bring the vinegar-water mixture to a boil. Once it reaches a boil, switch off the kettle and allow the hot vinegar solution to sit and soak the interior for 20 to 30 minutes. After the soaking period, simply pour out the solution. To finalize the cleaning, boil and discard one or two full kettles of plain water to ensure that no acidic taste from the vinegar remains.
Additional considerations for keeping your kettle spotless

To ensure the longevity and performance of your kitchen appliances, regular cleaning is essential. For your electric kettle, which mainly heats tap or filtered water, a thorough cleaning every few months is typically sufficient. However, if you frequently use your kettle for multiple cups of tea or coffee throughout the day, or if you live in an area with hard water, you may want to clean it more often—ideally once a month. It's also beneficial to periodically check the interior for any visible mineral deposits.
After completing a self-cleaning cycle with water and vinegar, it's wise to also polish the exterior. You can do this by using a towel dampened with soapy water to wipe away any dirt or grime, then drying it thoroughly with a clean towel. This will leave your kettle sparkling clean both inside and out, ensuring the water you boil is just as pristine.
