As previously noted, licorice is seldom gluten-free. This may seem surprising since it doesn't include any cookies or wafers, but is instead a chewy candy. Additionally, licorice roots themselves do not contain gluten. However, many manufacturers incorporate gluten to help the licorice achieve that familiar texture we all enjoy, which unfortunately excludes those who are gluten-free.
Enter Scottie Dogs. If you're thinking, "Scottie Dogs? Why does that sound familiar? [insert puzzled face emoji]," you're not alone. These treats aren't as frequently found on gas station shelves nowadays; they are more of a nostalgic indulgence for older generations. You can think of them alongside Necco Wafers and Sugar Daddy caramels.
Nonetheless, many people have indeed encountered Scottie Dogs: small red or black licorice pieces shaped like little dogs. Both the red and black varieties are gluten-free, as well as free from milk, peanuts, soy, and eggs. So, in addition to being simply delicious, they are perfect for those with various dietary sensitivities.

They collaborate with certain brands whose items may be produced in facilities that handle gluten, such as candy canes, hot cocoa, and chocolate-covered coffee beans, among others. While these products do not contain gluten, they may be made in environments where gluten is present. Whether you consider these safe to consume will depend on the severity of the allergy.

If you prefer milder sour candies (some of which even come with a health warning), Smarties might be the perfect choice for you. They offer a fruity taste, a gentle sour kick, and just the right touch of chalkiness reminiscent of traditional candies. In fact, they've been a favorite since the 1940s. Not only are the classic Smarties gluten-free, but so is everything produced by the Smarties Candy Company. Be cautious with other varieties, as only the regular and sugar-free patties are gluten-free; options like the Minis and Shapes contain gluten. Additionally, it’s important to remember that not all candies are gluten-free, as some specialty varieties may include gluten or gluten-containing ingredients. If you’re a fan of chocolate and peppermint and want to indulge without concern, stick to the regular patties in their signature silver wrapper.
8. Jelly Belly jelly beans

Every Jelly Belly flavor is gluten-free, and thank goodness for that, as there truly is no better jelly bean out there. With over 100 flavors available, 50 can be purchased individually. Additionally, they are free from peanuts, dairy, and fat, and are vegetarian-friendly.
While I personally can't fathom why anyone would choose anything other than Jelly Belly jelly beans, you might be in the mood for a different type of jelly bean. If that's the case, be sure to check the packaging. Not all jelly beans are guaranteed to be gluten-free, and some may be produced in facilities that also process gluten-containing products, even if they are gluten-free themselves. Reliable options include Jelly Bean Factory and Jolly Rancher jelly beans.
9. GIN GINS

Some people enjoy a bit of heat, and for them, gluten-free and vegan Gin Gins are a fantastic choice. With a delightful blend of sweetness and spice, these soft, chewy candies are individually wrapped and come in a variety of flavors. They are well-known for alleviating nausea and motion sickness, but they’re also simply delicious for ginger enthusiasts. Many individuals keep them handy to satisfy a sweet craving, while others rely on them for relief from mild indigestion after a lavish brunch or buffet.
The Ginger People, the makers of Gin Gins, also appear to have commendable agricultural practices. Their ginger is sourced from farms near their production facilities to reduce their carbon footprint. If you enjoy somewhat natural and delightfully chewy fruit-flavored candies, these are a great choice. Just keep in mind that some Welch's products contain gelatin, and others may be made in facilities that also handle nuts. The ingredient label will list all allergens, so you can check for yourself.
11. Starburst

If you've ever battled with your sibling over the last pink Starburst, you understand the cultural significance of these vibrant squares of taffy. Produced by Mars Wrigley, they were initially named Opal Fruits, which is fitting given their glossy appearance when unwrapped. Not only do they look delightful in their square packaging, but they are also gluten-free and come in an astonishing array of flavors. However, keep in mind that this information applies only to the United States; in countries like New Zealand or Australia, they may include wheat flour.
And if you're truly passionate about those pink Starburst, you can purchase a pack that features only the pink and red flavors, perfect for satisfying your specific sweet cravings. Say farewell to squabbles with your siblings (or, ahem, your partners, friends, parents, coworkers, bosses, or elected officials).

Just Born, the candy manufacturer founded in 1923 and known for creating the beloved Peeps, is also the maker of Mike and Ike. (Interestingly, the correct term is singular, despite how it sounds.) If you enjoy hard candies (like those classic strawberry lozenges often found at restaurant checkouts) but prefer a stick format, then Dum-Dums are an excellent choice. They’re sweet, available in a wide variety of flavors, and perfectly sized. Plus, let’s be honest, committing to a Blow Pop can be quite the undertaking, so a more convenient treat might suit you better. The good news? Dum-Dums are completely gluten-free. While they aren’t officially certified, none of their flavors contain gluten ingredients, allowing you to indulge without worry.
However, a word of caution: as my kids like to joke, you might want to keep some Smarties nearby if you’re munching on Dum-Dums. (Just kidding! There’s no scientific evidence that Dum-Dums make you less intelligent... although studies do suggest that sugar can lower your IQ, so perhaps there’s a grain of truth to it after all.)
15. Brach's Natural Candy Corn

When it comes to candies that people commonly link to the Halloween season, candy corn is at the top of the list. And for good reason! With their charming corn kernel shape (and the delightful mixes that include my personal favorite, Brach's mellowcream pumpkin), they truly capture the spirit of Halloween. But you might be asking, are they gluten-free?
The classic Brach's candy corn, produced by Farley's & Sathers, does not use wheat for its smooth texture or sweet flavor, making it free from gluten-containing ingredients. However, the company does not guarantee that its facilities and manufacturing processes are gluten-free, which increases the risk of cross-contamination. Additionally, recipes can change, so it's always wise to check the packaging.
Currently, Jelly Belly also offers a gourmet version of candy corn. If you're willing to trade a bit of that Brach's charm for the sake of someone with severe gluten intolerance, you'll be pleased to know that they assert their products are gluten-free. If you decide to try other brands of candy corn (and you definitely should, because all candy corn is a treat), be sure to read the label as well.
16. Swedish Fish

Swedish Fish are one of those candies that tend to divide opinions, thanks to their incredibly chewy texture. (Trust me on this: if you have braces or glue-in retainers, steer clear of Swedish Fish. You might end up regretting it, and you can count on receiving a stern lecture from your orthodontist.) Regardless of your feelings about them, it's reassuring to know they are gluten-free.

Additionally, although Cadbury Adams Swedish Fish are gluten-free in theory due to the absence of gluten-containing ingredients, the packaging does not carry a GF label, indicating they could be produced in a facility that handles gluten.
17. Butterfingers

This is an important question: Is there anyone who doesn't adore a Butterfinger bar? They offer the ideal mix of crunchy peanut butter (which is a marvel of modern science in itself), enveloped in chocolate, with a delightful melty and crumbly texture. Additionally, they are available in various sizes and are gluten-free, which is quite remarkable, as it feels like indulging in a flaky pastry cookie.
However, a word of caution: Currently, only the original flavor is gluten-free. Many other varieties, such as the Crisp, Pumpkins, Hearts, Jingles, and other options you might encounter online, at the grocery store, or during Halloween, are not gluten-free. Even the Giant Butterfinger, which resembles the size of a small loaf of bread, contains gluten, despite sharing the same flavor profile. In other words, you'll need to stick with the classic version for a gluten-free treat.
18. Bar chocolate

Various types of chocolate bars are entirely gluten-free. In fact, chocolate in its pure form does not contain gluten. This applies to white, milk, and dark chocolate, although any of these may include gluten-containing additives. Therefore, it's essential to read the ingredient label and confirm that the chocolate bar was made in a facility that does not process other gluten-containing items.
Chocolate bars also earn their spot on this list for another reason. While many of these treats can be delightful additions to cookies, ice cream, and more, bar chocolate and baker's chocolate are the only genuine baking ingredients mentioned. They are frequently used in recipes for cakes, brownies, cookies, and frostings, and it's challenging to replace the smooth, waxy texture of chocolate bars with cocoa powder. Thus, it's crucial for those following a gluten-free diet to know how accessible baking chocolate is, so let's spread the word about this delicious news!
