What if your butter isn't so easy to measure?

Sometimes, you might encounter butter sold in blocks instead of sticks, without paper wrapping that indicates clear measurements, or in irregular shapes. What should you do in such cases?
There are a few alternative methods to measure a cup of butter, even if it’s too firm to pack into a measuring cup. First, if you have a kitchen scale, keep in mind that 1 cup is equivalent to two sticks or half a pound. Thus, you can weigh out half a pound, which is 8 ounces. Many restaurant kitchens that receive butter in large blocks instead of sticks often use grams; in this scenario, two sticks of butter equal 227 grams or one half block.
If those options don’t work, you can try the water-displacement method. Start by filling a 2-cup measuring cup with water up to the 1-cup line. Then, add the butter, which is not soluble in water, causing the water level to rise. Once the water reaches the 2-cup mark, you’ll know you’ve added 1 cup of butter. Simply remove the butter, pat it dry lightly, and there you have it—a cup of butter!
