The one exception to the fridge-only rule

If you’d like to preserve this smooth topping for an extended period, freezing it in a bag is a viable option. When stored this way, it should remain good as long as it stays frozen. However, while refrigeration or freezing is ideal for storing pure maple syrup, there is one exception to consider. Some maple syrups are hot-packed, a canning technique that allows them to be shelf-stable. If your syrup was packaged in this manner, you can keep it in the pantry while unopened. Just be sure to refrigerate it after opening.
Choose the syrup option that best suits your needs. Pure maple syrup, made from 100% natural sap, tends to be pricier than the standard pancake syrups. (That said, it can still serve as an affordable substitute for vanilla.) If you’re looking to indulge in something natural, opt for 100% maple. However, if you just need a bottle for a single meal of tasty buttermilk pancakes, a more economical table syrup will suffice.
As always, check the labels on your syrup bottle to find the best storage method, and a good rule of thumb is to use it within a year. If you notice any mold, sour odors, or unusual colors, it’s likely time to dispose of that sweet syrup.
