Looking out for bad blueberries

Regardless of how you store your blueberries, it's important to monitor them for any that may be spoiled. Even with proper storage techniques, you can typically expect a few berries to become moldy or rotten within a few days, although most should remain good for over a week. Any berries showing signs of mold should be discarded, as mold can quickly spread throughout the container.
There are also some less obvious indicators of spoilage: Berries that feel soft and mushy or are leaking juice may be starting to go bad, so it's wise to dispose of them. Similarly, wrinkled berries should also be thrown away. A sour or fermented odor can indicate that the blueberries are no longer fresh, although it might be impractical to sniff each individual berry for this. When purchasing blueberries at the store, be sure to avoid pints that contain wrinkled or moldy berries to ensure they stay fresh longer.
How to freeze blueberries

If you want your blueberries to stay fresh for up to 10 months, freezing them is a great option. A study from South Dakota State University even indicates that frozen blueberries may offer more antioxidants than fresh ones. Start by removing any spoiled berries, then spread the good ones out on a baking sheet or similar surface. Place the sheet in the freezer for a few hours or overnight, and once they are frozen, transfer the berries to an airtight container. This method prevents them from sticking together in the container. It's important to avoid moisture, so refrain from washing the berries before freezing (or if you must, ensure they are completely dry), as excess moisture can lead to ice forming on the berries, which can affect their texture.
Keep in mind that freezing causes ice crystals to develop inside the berries, which can alter their structure and make them slightly mushy when thawed. For this reason, it's often best to use frozen berries in recipes where they are fully incorporated, such as smoothies or baked goods like muffins, although they are perfectly fine to eat on their own as well.
