Mick Jagger spread the drink far and wide

Bob Lozoff, the bartender at the Trident restaurant during the 1970s, claims to have created the tequila sunrise, drawing inspiration from the Singapore sling, a tiki cocktail made with gin. Meanwhile, the Arizona Biltmore resort in Phoenix also asserts that it invented the tequila sunrise back in the 1930s, featuring a mix of tequila, soda, lime juice, and crème de cassis. Regardless of who truly originated the drink, it was Lozoff's version that captured Mick Jagger's heart and helped popularize it.
The Rolling Stones' 1972 tour was monumental and notorious for its wild reputation. In his memoir "Life," guitarist Keith Richards mentions that the tour was referred to by various names, including "the Cocaine and Tequila Sunrise tour." By 1973, the drink's fame was further cemented when the Eagles released their hit single "Tequila Sunrise," although the song itself is more about sipping tequila straight while watching the sunrise. The cocktail also inspired the lesser-known tequila sunset, which sometimes substitutes grapefruit juice for orange juice and uses blackberry liqueur instead of grenadine. Ultimately, it’s rare for someone to take an obscure cocktail and elevate it to widespread fame—unless that person happens to be Mick Jagger.
