Think twice before sharing your membership with others

Adding someone to your Costco membership comes with certain limitations, so you may want to reconsider any attempts to bypass them. In mid-2024, Forbes reported that the retailer plans to implement scanning devices at entrances. If a membership card does not have a photo of the cardholder, a photo ID will be necessary for entry. While members can still bring guests, there are restrictions on shopping as a guest; only the cardholder is permitted to make purchases, meaning you'll need to buy items for your guests if they want anything.
Additionally, Costco's terms state that they reserve the right to cancel or deny membership at any time. If you're caught sharing your card, it could be confiscated or revoked entirely. Taste of Home even noted instances of individuals sharing their experiences on TikTok after having their cards taken by employees due to suspected misuse. Although Costco does not provide shopping passes for nonmembers, those without a membership can still use prepaid Costco Shop cards, access the Costco pharmacy, and purchase alcohol in certain states.
While a Costco membership comes with various rules, these regulations are essential for the warehouse to maintain its low prices. In 2023, the company generated $4.6 billion in membership revenue alone, which contributes to the ability for members to enjoy items like $1.50 hot dogs and $4.99 rotisserie chickens.
