Tips for air-frying tofu

While mastering the art of cooking tofu can be challenging, air-frying it is surprisingly straightforward. With a few easy tips, you’ll have a quick and delicious tofu recipe that you’ll want to make again and again.
Tofu is available in several varieties—silken, soft, firm, and extra-firm. For the best results in achieving a tofu that retains its shape and develops that essential crunch, extra-firm tofu is your top choice due to its lower moisture content. However, it still comes packed in water, so it’s important to drain and press it before air-frying. To do this, remove the tofu from its packaging, wrap it in paper towels to soak up the excess liquid, and place a heavy object on top to press out the moisture—options include cast iron pans, textbooks, or a water-filled coffee pot (just be careful not to tip it over). If you prefer a more straightforward solution, consider purchasing a dedicated tofu press.
While an air fryer can impart a delightful toasted flavor to tofu, marinating and seasoning it beforehand enhances its taste even further. If you’re looking for a marinade, try mixing soy sauce, miso paste, sriracha, and honey for a deliciously sticky, sweet, and savory blend. For seasoning, lightly coating the tofu in oil along with your favorite spice mix will ensure even browning and flavor distribution. Adding a tablespoon of cornstarch and a breadcrumb coating can also make your air-fried tofu extra crispy. Be mindful not to overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking. Once done, you can use air-fried tofu in satay-style skewers, Buddha bowls, or spring rolls.
