To trap or not to trap (ethylene gas)

To prevent fruits from ripening too quickly, placing them in a low-humidity crisper drawer can be effective. But what if you want your fruits to ripen more rapidly? You might have heard about the technique of using other fruits to hasten the ripening of an avocado, which involves ethylene gas to accelerate the process. This method can also be applied in your crisper drawer; by storing ethylene-producing fruits in a high-humidity environment, you can encourage faster ripening since the gas is contained rather than allowed to escape.
However, caution is needed as this can adversely affect ethylene-sensitive produce, particularly vegetables, that you don’t want to ripen. Therefore, if you choose to use ethylene to ripen something, it’s best to do so either in a high-humidity drawer by itself or on your countertop. The last thing you want is to attempt ripening in a crisper drawer filled with vegetables, as this could lead to spoilage without any benefits.
While there are many ineffective ways to utilize fridge drawers, there are also numerous effective methods to prolong the life of your produce or assist in ripening when necessary. The key is to remember what you’ve purchased and consume it before it becomes a shriveled mess. As helpful as crisper drawers can be, they can’t compensate for forgetfulness!
