Harry Houdini's other favorite food items can be found in two distinct cookbooks to which he contributed recipes. Alongside 99 other notable figures of his time, Houdini was invited to share a favorite dish for the robustly titled "The Stag Cook Book: A Man's Cook Book for Men." In this collection, the renowned escape artist revealed his preferred pairing of deviled eggs and a scalloped mushroom dish. His recipe involves blending egg yolks with melted butter, cayenne pepper, vinegar, and mustard. The creamy yolk mixture is then spooned back into the egg white halves and served atop a bed of lettuce, garnished with salt, pepper, vinegar, and an unexpected hint of sugar.
In another cookbook released in 1916, titled "Celebrated Actor-Folks' Cookeries: A Collection of The Favorite Foods of Famous Players," Houdini shares a dessert recipe and admits to having a bit of a sweet tooth. As noted earlier, he had a fondness for Hungarian custard bread pudding with cherries, and he provides his own version of this dish. Bread and butter pudding is a classic British dessert made with stale bread, rich vanilla custard, and often accompanied by vanilla ice cream. Houdini's recipe calls for white bread and a straightforward custard made from milk, sugar, and eggs, flavored with vanilla and nutmeg.
